Jatinga, Assam
We all love our natural habitat, but if it gets damaged somehow, our full concern focuses on it. And same as today, we have a story of a place named JATINGA. This place is in the Dima Hasao district in Assam. This is a beautiful place. But every place has a history.
Do
you know why we are talking about Jatinga?
The reason, there is a massive suicide of birds.
Every year at a certain time.
In the monsoon season, September and October there
address a massive suicide. Every year during this time of the month, at 6:00
p.m. to 9:30 p.m. there is a massive killing of birds.
Now
the question arises how do they die?
The local people there, throw bamboo on the birds when they are passing through there. The tribal people thought that some
spiritual things would cause them harm, that's why they took this action.
Where
were the birds going?
Due to flying at high altitude, the group of birds
was falling apart and then they tried to fastly reach a light and at that time
the villagers thought that they were some kind of spiritual thing and they hit
them.
Which
kind of birds was getting killed?
There is not one kind of bird species. There were
tiger bittern, black bittern, little egret, pond heron, Indian
pitta, kingfisher, hill partridge, green pigeon, emerald dove, necklaced laughing thrush, black drongo, and juvenile. These all are included in the
massive killing.
Is Jatinga the only place where this happened?
No, Jatinga
is not the only place where massive bird kills happen. There are few more
places which are Malaysia, the Philippines, and Mizoram.
E.P Gee and Salim Ali were the ones who made it a
globe of attention.
Now the wildlife officials have taken the step to
stop this. They are educating and creating awareness the illiterate people
about it.
And this has reduced the massive killing of birds.

As we are human beings, it is our duty not to disturb the natural habitat and if someone somehow disturbs it, we should take some actions. And in the case of animals, we should be more concerned because they can't express their pain. Humanity is more important than anything.
Try
to protect animals.
