               Tungnath Mahadev Temple 

The Tungnath Temple is the highest temple of Lord Shiva situated in the mountains of Tungnath is the Rudraprayag District, Uttrakhand, India. The Tungnath Temple is the highest Shiva temple in the world nestled at an altitude of 3680 meters above sea level. The temple is the highest among the Panch Kedar temple of Uttrakhand and is believed to be more than 1000 years old. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati you can see idols of other Gods also. This temple was first discovered by Adi Shankracharya.

                The Tungnath temple can be reached by a simple trek of 3.5 km start at from Chopta. The trek of Tungnath goes through rocky terrains and bushes. These things give a pleasing view to our eyes. In this trek, you can see some named and unnamed peaks of The Himalayan Range.

Opening and closing date of Tungnath Temple

The Tungnath temple opens when the Char Dham of Uttrakhand is opened. The Char Dham is opened in the month of April or May every year during Vaisakh Panchmi. The date is decided by Badro Temple Committee. The Tungnath temple is closed in winters after the Diwali festival, and the idol of the deity is a shift to Mukunath which is 19km away from the Tungnath. The idol is shifted by the priest of the temple. The priest of the temple is a local Brahmins of Makku village.

·       For those who want to visit Tungnath have to check their own physical fitness because the trek route is not so much easy and especially for asthmatic people.

·       Travelling in monsoon should be avoided because the trek route is covered by hilly areas and due to this, there will be a much greater chance for landslides which is dangerous for your life.

Staying in Tungnath:

There are some resorts or lodges open up at Tungnath for tourists and pilgrims. These lodges can be booked on arrival online. For staying most of the tourists and pilgrims prefer to stay at Chopta instead of lodges in Tungnath because of the better facilities provided in Chopta. Also, the food facilities are also good and good for all. Non-vegetarians, alcohol, and tobacco are strictly prohibited at Tungnath if you caught for this then strict action must be taken against you.

How to reach Tungnath

By Flight:  The closest airport from Tungnath is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun which is 232 km from Tungnath.

By Train: The nearest railway station from Tungnath is in Rishikesh which is 215 km from Tungnath.

By Road: Tungnath Temple can be reached from Kund-Gopeshwar the road up to Chpta which is about 212 km from Rishikesh via Chamoli – Gopeshwar – Chopta route. Buses cabs are easily available on this route. From Chopta you have to travel on foot on a 3 km long trek to Tungnath Temple.
