Konark Sun Temple has situated in Odisha about 35 km from Puri district. The temple is one the most famous tourist destination in India and this temple is declared as a world heritage by UNESCO. The temple is built on the coastline of Odisha and it is the best model of ancient creativity and fluidity of ideas. The Konark Sun Temple is depicted on Indian currency of 10 rupee note. The temple was built in the 13th Century by the King Narasimhadeva 1st from ( 1238 – 1250 B.C ). This temple is dedicated to the God Surya. Konark means the sun and the four corners.

Konark Temple Architecture

This temple is known for its special Kalinga Architecture having an impressive look of a 100 ft. (30m) high chariot with huge wheels and horses. All of this was carved from stone. This architecture is once 200m high, but most of this temple is ruined by invaders.

                       The Konark Sun Temple has a 128 ft high audience hall, dining hall which survives in the present time. There are 24 intricately designed wheels, 12ft in diameter which are seen to be pulled by horses. These 7 horses represent the week, the wheels symbolize the 12 months of the year, and the day cycle is symbolized by eight spokes in the wheel. This whole structure tells how time is controlled by Sun. The entrance of the Konark Temple leads to the shrine of the Surya Dev made up of chlorite stone. The walls of this temple are enhanced with reliefs having complicated carving of various figures including Hindu Gods, images of the everyday mortal life, birds also erotic sculptures on its Shikhara which belongs to the Tantra tradition.

 

Mayadevi Temple

The Konark temple has also its subsidiaries temple the most famous subsidiaries temple is Myadevi Temple which is discovered in 1909 during the excavation. It lies on the west side of the Sun Temple. This temple is dedicated to the Myadevi – the wife of Surya Dev and the interesting fact is that this temple is older than the Sun Temple built in late 11th century. This temple has an idol of Nataraja, Surya with Vishnu, Vayu and Agni.

Konark Temple Timings

Konark Temple opens in the early morning at 6 am and closes in the evening at 8 pm.

How to reach Konark Temple

Konark Temple is situated in the Konark town which lies in the district of Puri, Odisha. It is approx 35 km from Puri. The Puri is also a famous destination for Hindu Pilgrimages because of the Lord Jagannath Temple is the main pilgrimage center for Hindus. The Konark town is well connected to puri and Bhubaneshwar (The capital city of Odisha) because of its famous tourist destination.

Nearest Bus Stand to Konark Temple

Konark Bus stand is 6 minutes from the Sun Temple, you can take the bus from Puri and reach the temple in an hour.

Nearest Railway Station

 The Puri Railway Station is the nearest railway station from Konark Temple which is about 30 km from the Sun Temple.

Nearest Airport to Konark Sun Temple

Bhubaneshwar Aiport or Biju Patnaik International Aiport is the nearest Aiport from the Sun Temple which is about 65 km from Sun Temple.

Hotels Near Konark Sun Temple

The nearest hotels you can find near the temple is on the bus stand of Konark town or if you want the night stay in Konark you can stay in Panthanivas which is operated by OTDC and also you can stay in hotels of Puri because the temple is not far away from Puri and Puri is also a tourist destination due to its beaches and Temples.
